2009 - 20010 Scholarship Committee

The South Bay Chinese Service Club awarded $10,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors of Chinese descent at our 40th annual SBCSC Scholarship Luncheon held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Newark-Silicon Valley on Saturday, April 25, 2009.  SBCSC President Linette Young greeted the graduates and praised them for their outstanding academic records and participation in community activities.  Each applicant was introduced and presented with certificates of recognition from Congressman Pete Stark, Senator Ellen Corbett, Assemblyman Alberto Torrico and Alameda County Supervisor Scott Haggerty.  Honored guests included, Jo Cazenave representing Congressman Pete Stark, Fremont School Board Members Ivy Wu and Lily Mei, Ohlone College Trustee Garrett Yee, former Fremont City Councilman Steve Cho and his wife, Amy, Citizens for Better Community Vice President Tim Tran, former President David Sheen and Board Member Angela Yang, and John J. Dutra (President) of Dutra Enterprises.

Our speakers were State Senator Leland Yee and former Scholarship recipient Sandy Liao. Both speakers shared their career experiences. Senator Yee mentioned that he had not intended to become involved in politics but he rather had been trained and received his doctorate degree as a psychologist, a profession that he had aspired to as a juvenile. He got started in politics as a school board member and later on as a member of the board of supervisors for the city of San Francisco. He said that politics is a noble profession and encouraged the students to pursue it as a career.  Sandy recalled the sacrifices she and her family had made as she grew up in the Bay Area, her recent experiences in college and her love of volunteering.  They advised the students to pursue their dreams, challenge themselves, work hard and dare to step out of their comfort zones.  They encouraged them to pursue their dreams, choose their experiences wisely and strive to keep their integrity.  Both presentations were very well received by the students, their parents, club members, donors and local dignitaries.

The 34 applicants represented 5 different high schools in the Tri City area. They are an impressive group of scholars.  Their average GPA is 3.705 and together they have donated over 8,874 community service hours.  In this group there are 10 National Merit Finalists, 16AP Scholars, and 3 students with perfect unweighted 4.0 GPA’s. The students are also officers and members of a number of school clubs and in student government.
